I have re-visited this picture from 2010 and re-processed it. Can I have some C&C please?

Hello, Steve. The picture and the subject is pretty interesting. Not a complaint but rather just an observation, I think the sharpening (or contrast) was a bit too much. If you shot this in RAW, I would recommend opening up the exposure on the shaded area below the "Bank and Gold Coast Casino" signs. Good B&W conversion, btw.

Willie said it much more nicely than my original thought -"well, do ya think ya got it sharp enough, pardner?" in my best John Wayne voice.
This is one where I'd have to see the original to know what you had in mind on the conversion given your level of PP work on other images.

Have you got glue on your fingers, as I think you have pushed those sliders a bit too far on this one.

Steve Was it shot RAW? How about posting it for download so we can have a go? Up to you, only suggesting. It's a good scene, but I think it's over-cooked. www.mediafire.com

Thanks for the comments everyone. It must have exaggerated the sharpening when I re-sized it somehow. It didn't look that bad when still full size. the RAW file is here: www.mediafire.com/?y79cjmokr1azntl if anyone wants to have a go at it. I will have a bit more of a play around with it over the next couple of days too.

Didn't have your sky, so had to invent one...not the best sky, but okay...I think.

It's a great subject but still don't think it look right, possibly too contrasty, I think Chris's edit is a bit better.

Oh! I thought you meant 'after the Christmas rush....' Well, 'La-di-dah' (Annie Hall) I thought that too, and I can't stand Christmas...

Steve. I think it looks better as a colour shot. It presumably is somewhere in the wild west and so one expects colour. The setting of f/7 has made the trees (which are quite prominent) out of focus - zoom in to 100% and you can see it.

I had a go on this photograph... It was not taken in Britain was it ? Antonio, this reminds me of an old sepia toned photograph (daguerreotype, even?) of the old west. It also reminds me of 'Bonanza' which, somehow, I remember in B&W but I don't think that we had a B&W TV and I don't know - I think it was always in color. It could be that the color on our first tv was just terribly faded - sepia toned, in fact, now that I think about it. Anyway, the trees look like Ponderosa Pines. and I think that Rob is right about them being oof but still so prominent. Especially because the out of focus parts seem to have an odd sheen. Actually, is there some haloing around the edges of the trees? I can't tell if it's simply cloud but I'm thinking not. I, especially, see it on the left hand tree. Then, I think that Chris is right - the clouds are funky and not going in the right direction (speak to them about it, next time, will 'ya?) but I think that I like it, simply, without clouds like Rob's and Antonio's edit. AND, it is a good thing that you cropped out that telephone pole. AND, it looks oddly modern - not late 1800s - too colorful and not enough faded AND what's up with the grass? I'm used to dirt on main street in front of buildings like this in a 'ghost town'. It's not 'faux' old gold rush? Where'd you take it???
