I know compostionally, this breaks every rule in the book, but I still think it is the best way to show this area...so, successful or back to the drawing board?

Looks like a success to me.Very good conversion and don't worry about the rules as they are made to be broken sometimes.

Yep, sometimes it is good to break rules. I think it work for you here Chris. Also I think you tinkering with you B&W PP is getting better all the time.

I like it compositionally. Have you tried it with the grass a lot darker so the pathway becomes almost like it is lit compared to the rest of the scene. Just a thought

I do like this, the pathway leads you nicely into the image, great sky and plenty of detail in those trees, it would be nice to see the colour version, but I think the monochrome has worked very well.

I like it compositionally. Have you tried it with the grass a lot darker so the pathway becomes almost like it is lit compared to the rest of the scene. Just a thought When I made the whole walkway stand out too much against the darkened grass, it was a bit on the garish side. I left the marsh grass as it was in the original, albeit with a bit of light highlight added back in for some variation, and darkened the grass substantially. What do you think of this version?

I think I still prefer the original, as the pathway is strong enough to hold it's own.

Have to agree with Barry. The areas between the grass and boardwalk are dark enough to separate the two.

second edit for me, looks a lot stronger, i would 'gently' burn in the clouds also, i would want to make the path the most dominant part of the photo, also i recon there's a lot of detail to bring out of the wooden panels, or is it being lost from down-sampling?

Well my vote goes to the first edit. But that aside, the composition just grabs me, it feels like a gladiator is on the path on his way to the colosseum with the trees as the crowd, anxious for his blood!
& no I haven't been into the medicine cabinet, but perhaps my interpretation is why I don't & shouldnt try landscapes.

Oddly enough, I had a similar feeling when walking back toward the car (the skinny end) that I was on a journey which had no particular end...just wandering around the salt marsh for eternity...and not a bad place to be (except in a hurricane).
It was a particularly serene place, a housing development that never got past paver brick roadways and utilities in neat green boxes every hundred feet or so. One house in a development meant for at least 400.
