I haven't been using my camera because I've been having computer problems. I have plenty of free space but CS and LR either freeze or crash. I've tried adjusting settings and making sure all updates are done. I've run spybot, malware bytes, cc cleaner, defrag, hardware diagnostics etch, and still it's painful to use. Does anyone have any ideas? Could it be that the hard drive is just too old or has a problem? It is not quite 4 yrs old. Anything else I can run to diagnose and fix? Somebody help me...

Thinking so? But then I am not a geek. Did you check the size of your hard drive? Have you maxed it out? When was the last time you cleaned your recycle bin, ran a de-fragger? What size files are you working with? I sometimes work with large files that are hundreds of MB. Lots of questions, but maybe best to take it to a knowledgeable person.
Might be time to upgrade.

I've run everything I can think of, defragged... No geeks here, either!

Check and see if your scratch disk has ample room

How, exactly, do I check the scratch disk? How should it be set? Does it make a difference with Adobe programs if I'm running AMD vs Intel?

Have a look under preferences/performance Mary to see how much disk space is given over to the scratch disk. You can also view how much ram is being used and adjust this if it is too low. I am for example allowing 70% of my ram to be used by Photoshop, which I think is the default.

I have 505.something scratch disk space available. I have it set to 80 % memory to be used for CS5.

One thing you could do is open up task manager and put it on system monitor. Then open up various programs and see if they are maxing out your processor. Windows 7 will be pretty processor heavy if you are on a dual core. You could run the windows performance check through control panel to see if it can gain any performance by changing priorities of graphics, background working etc.
RAM is cheap so you could have a look on crucial.com and see if you can increase what you have already got, but this is normally only good for an extra 6 months or so.
To be honest, 4 years is about right for the life of a computer these days and they are cheaper than ever so it may be just as well to bite the bullet.
