How much of this is PP and how much camera/lighting? Likey velly much, boss. My impression is: Image #1: 95% camera, 5% PP. Image #2: 90% camera 10% PP. Image #3: 90% camera 10% PP. Image #4: 90% camera 10% PP. His softbox must be bigger than 12".

Second image is more than 10%...be hard to get that much isolation of tonal range strictly in camera...and I only say that because the tonal range in the reflection is the same in all of them.

His softbox must be bigger than 12". Ya wanna rephrase that one, Jiro? ;D Actually it was 36inches. I used an 20inch softbox on the flash head then shot it through a 36inch pop-out diffuser (it's all very cheap stuff). But the relative light-source to subject is about 3:1 which makes for a very nice soft light, especially as it was very close to the subject. The bit of gold wire is to hold the diffuser in place. Big light source, close to a relatively small subject = a very good light.

Great set of monochrome images, but I do like the first image.

Rob, I do appreciate the images – who knows, in time I may get to like then too – my problem not yours. I also wanted to say a big THANK YOU for showing the lighting set-up. I'm a slow learner, and need all the help I can get. This and other bits and pieces are giving me loads of things to try out when we are rained / snowed in.

This and other bits and pieces are giving me loads of things to try out when we are rained / snowed in. I bought my studio flash kit about 4 years ago. It was the best £300 I ever spent, and I've had a lot of use out of it. It's great for macro/closeup work, giving a beautiful soft light that you just couldn't get with anything else. I did this one with it. clematis by rob marshall images, on Flickr Mine is a cheapo Kenro kit, but I have had no problems with it at all. Interfit are supposed to be a good cheap kit - like this one www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-interfit-int119-exd200-home-studio-kit/p1015681 although if you want to do portraits as well, you might need to go to 400W power. And yes, it's great for those long winter days when you can't get out.

Lordy, phew! I need to stop reading into your images.... you feeling alright, these days?! I can only appreciate these images - they're gorgeous, it seems to me. (Is that dust in the first one, though? ) The technicalities are beyond my comprehension, at the moment, though, but thank you, again, for showing us the setup - it's on my list of things to learn this winter, too. I'm soaking the info in. (and, that last one - the flower - I just love it! Get a thrill every time I see it!

Thanks Rob, The link for the lighting kit is very interesting – that's a lot of kit for the money! That clematis shot is exceptional. Stack focus? I'd take about 10 frames at f11.

It is a lot of kit for the money. But sometimes things are good value. For the use I put the lighting to (mostly still life) it's excellent. Yes, it was focus stacked.
