I find this and similar threads across the web quite amusing when a new camera is announced, particularly a mid to top of range offering. To many of us salivate over or rubbish the camera according to our particular brand loyalty, eagerly re-plan our budgets so that we can purchase this latest model, whilst providing those marketing men in black all that they want to read or hear. Why? I'm sure most of us bought our first SLR using a common sense approach. In other words what suited us best within our budget at the time. And I wouldn't mind betting that most of us then stuck with the same brand when moving to DSLR because we were familiar with the system and may well have built up a collection of lenses and accessories. All very logical, which is more than I can say for the brand wars. Are there really any bad cameras about today? I doubt it, although some models will be better specified to meet specific requirements. My first decent SLR was a Pentax, which I chose after much testing and deliberation over the Nikon I really wanted because I couldn't afford the extra £20. Many years later when that broke I could only afford a Praktica which saw me through to the digital age. I then went back to basics and tried both Nikon and Canon before settling on the D70 Nikon. It was heavier and slightly larger than the Canon which suited my large hands. (I'm built like a brick outhouse!!). A small cash windfall enabled me some years after to buy a D2Xs. A Nikon again for no other reason than by that time I had a fair collection of decent Nikkor lenses and flash etc. and the basic handling and controls were similar to the D70. Were my photographs any better? No, but it did things that the D70 couldn't and importantly to me, it was built to last. So am I in the market for a D4? No. Do I admire it? Yes, in the same way that I admire the 1DX and 5D, but I mostly shoot for the web so 6Mpx are plenty, yet alone the 12Mpx of the D2Xs, and the latter is still likely to outlast me. I'm aware of the limitations of both my cameras, particularly their low light capabilities but that just adds another challenge in my quest to master the art of photography. Tough luck on you marketing guys, it's all wasted on me.
