Me thinks it opens up a can of worms...me thinks that commenting on each other's work is precious plenty. However, if at some point it does merit a category, I would love to see each member's work only scored by the moderators and the moderators work scored by the group as a whole. I think this would eliminate a lot of non-participating members, and keep the merit of the work intact.

With the forum being young and growing, we'll try to sort out the essentials first then move on to decisions that we will incorporate on the forum to attract guests. For now, Mick (muckergee) gave us a very nice idea of doing it on an assignment level to force us individually as photographers to develop our sense of goal with every shot and how to attack a topic using a vision in our mind. You can find it here: fstop-cafe.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=assignments&action=display&thread=50

I think the mini-comps are fun. I don't think we need them right now. When I was at that other forum I always thought it would be nice to NOT know who posted the images. Sometimes, it's hard to separate the person from the image... you know what I mean?

If we do that here at F-Stop in the future we need to go around the posting so the tech-savvy guys can't check the exif data and the link as to who shot what. That is really a good point with the anonymity, Mary. Thanks for sharing.

I find it quite refreshing not to be overwhelmed by competitions. What started off at a steady pace has now reached epidemic proportions at that other forum, which is a great pity. The non-competitive themes e.g. 'diagonals' is a great idea and get's us all thinking, maybe taking shots that we would not otherwise have considered. I also support anonymity.

Much as I enjoy competitions, I would prefer with the help of this forum and the "assignments" to "compete with myself" for a change. I am finding the C&C that is developing here is refreshingly honest and meaningful. So personally, I am in a constant competition with myself, encouraged to improve by C&C and the challenge of the time scaled assignments.

For now, I think the assignments are more than enough. However, the idea of having images in a competition and them being thoroughly critiqued is nice. We could appoint some "photo critics" from within the forum to do the job. I think that mini comps without critique won't add anything to the forum.

The mini comps IMHO got silly at the other place and I largely gave up with them. I found it all too often it was the subject than won the comp rather than the skill of the photographer in getting a particular shot or effect.
The Aaaaah or Ooooooh factor always seems to determine the winner rather than voters properly assessing the images for many factors.
So for me the form of mini comp over there is not good. However, it is nice to have a sense of achievement when your images are acknowledged. Maybe a shot of the month comp would be good but judged by a panel of mods and a couple of members. The members could change around every month to give everyone a go.

I agree wholeheartedly with Steve's view on the that other forum minicomps... I quit them altogether last week...just got too silly for words.

I would be more than happy to see comps, mini or otherwise, not become a dominant part of this forum. For me, that was one of the things that I found increasingly tiresome about another place, in that I felt an obligation to vote, at least, in comps, if not enter, and that took time away from general posting, critiquing in a meaningful way etc. But I will go along with a majority vote or opinion on comps.

Anonymous comps sound good to me. If there are comps then I would also request to know in some way how I did - if it's by vote how many did I get?

All of the member's valuable comments and suggestions are very much noted and kept for future referrals. Thank you very much for your suggestions.

So karma is "exclusifely" for those who has picture that was chosen by the "board of chairman" of the month.. Hopefully you all understand what I mean.. ;D

Quit doing the mini comps for the same reason as Steve and Chris. And when i did do them it was to see if i could post something to out do my previous vote count. Maybe those who post their images in the assignment thread can choose 1 image from their 5 and post them to a comp to be graded on(just like a post test in school)by vote count.
