Shot outdoors in a private garden a few days ago. I don't normally like BW floral shots, but this one seems to work OK? Looks better in Lightbox.

Nina is going to want to know exactly how you did this shot. She's been trying to master this technique for several weeks, now.
Nice shot and I agree, it works quite nicely in B&W.

Nina is going to want to know exactly how you did this shot. She's been trying to master this technique for several weeks, now. Well, you know what? Nina can just email $100 to my Paypal account... ;D OK... - Shot outdoors in bright sunlight, but I got the PA to hold a diffuser over it.
- I used spot metering.
- In CS5 I cropped it square and added a dark vignette in RAW.
- Elliptical tool to draw a circle around the centre of the flower, which I then feathered.
- Silver Efex (SEPro2) on the selected area with the layer set to luminosity (Jiro's method) to give it more boost in colour.
- Remove selection and convert it all to BW using SEPro2
- Reapply the selection and Invert the selected area, so the area outside the centre is selected, and apply FILTER/BLUR/RADIAL/ZOOM. You need to play around with the amount to get it looking right.
- Swap the selected area back to the centre and sharpen it (you don't need the outer area sharpened).
You can also do it in camera by taking two shots. One as normal, the other by zooming your zoom lens. Then blend the two images together in a feathered blend. I didn't do that here as the flower was moving in the breeze, and I didn't have a tripod.

Photographic impressionism!!! Hah!! And it does look very cool in the lightbox, when scrolled smaller on my machine - sort of like a black & white sun-god, presiding over the darness of the earth.

Very cool. Another trick being added to my list of things to try in the winter.

I like this Rob. The effect works really well with the shape of the petals.
I think I'll give your 2 shots method a go.

It's just absolutely gorgeous! It's so nice to have your good influence around, again. The B&W makes it magical. Kit said it so well - it does look like a sun or flames but it's more beautiful and evocative than any of the weak and silly words that I can come up with for it.

It really caught my eye... then I looked at it in lightbox... amazing. I'm not usually a B&W flower girl, but that is really beautiful. Thank you for sharing your method.
