Sometimes it happens that we link the images from where we store them - say Smugmug, Flickr or any other - and later for some reason, we erase the folder(s) or the file(s) causing a "hole" in the post. I am not going to show you an example because we all have seen this. What do I do to avoid such a problem ? In Smugmug - where almost all my photos are - I created an unlisted gallery called "f-stop cafe" which is only visible to me and from which I link the photos I post here. This way it is possible to show photos here which are not shown anywhere else and if ever I make any change to the "way" those images are linked I can always change this way to make them to re-appear. I hope I made myself understand. Here is an image from my control pannel within Smugmug for you to see. It is also possible in Flickr.

I forgot to say that I do more than that. I paste a link under the photo to know which post it is from

I do the same on Smug, Antonio. I too have a private folder, and it works quite well, especially as Smug displays the linked shot so nicely - Flickr links can look soft sometimes, especially when you select a different size to display.
But you can do the same sort of thing on Flickr. Just make the shot 'private' then get the link as normal and post to the forum (any forum) and it will be displayed as you have effectively given your permission for it to be displayed. The forum users will see it, but Flickr users will not. That's also good when doing edits of other forum members shots.
I think the 'photo hole' problem is primarily caused by deleting a file or folder. I moved some shots between sets yesterday, and that has no effect upon linked shots.

I tried to do this in photobucket but it wants to break the file links if I move them. I really would like to just have this folder for works of other member I might have a notion to edit. Anyone else using photobucket?

Good point, Antonio. Thanks for sharing.
I've been doing this for every forum I am a member of. I have specific folders on Flickr for every forum name so I know what images I am sharing to each of them. Makes it easier for me to keep records later.

Sorry, I was just trying something. You do lose it when you move a shot to another album. It works differently on Flickr because everything is in your Photostream and stays there. The concept of albums is facilitated by using sets and you can move photos between sets OK without losing the links because the actual shots still reside in the same location.
Thought of opening a Flickr account?

I have one...it is called "reimagefl" so if you see that embedded anywhere, you'll know its origins.

I have one...it is called "reimagefl" so if you see that embedded anywhere, you'll know its origins. Flickr is actually pretty good. It's great for storing your images and sharing them. And you get the chance to easily see some other good shots (yes, there are plenty). You can just see the better ones by making good photographers 'contacts' so you automatically see their latest shots on your Flickr homepage. You can change the screen name of your Flickr account, if you want to. Or you can set up another with a different email.

Changed name to chrisc_photo Can't see it - probably as the Google robot hasn't picked it up yet. Want to share it, and I'll make you a contact?
