I was just complaining to a friend off list about some of the emoticons we must choose from. They just won't do! I've tried and tried to like them but familiarity is definitely just breeding more contempt. The 'Cheesy' one is positively creepy. The 'Embarrassed' one is far too sad. I smile when I blush...and yes, before you laugh, I can be made to blush The 'Kiss' one is positively scary - like a lipstick-covered aunt bearing down on one. The 'Grin' looks as if his top lip has engulfed his nose. And why does every 'tongue out' Smiley look more like a dog on heat than what I want to convey - a jokey bit of teasing? I'm in a very happy, but nitpicking mood today, and would be love to hear what others think. I do like the rest of the Smiley's though. It's just those five that make me want to squish them And it is important, dammit! Dizzy would agree with me there. These little darlings are meant to help us avoid cultural misunderstandings Cheers, Seri

Cheeky! But guilty as charged (you know me too well ) But apart from my self-confessed addiction to this forum, I do other things. Since starting this thread I've cleaned my downstairs PC, registry included, and sorted out some great cooking apples for a blackberry and apple crumble later ;D And I now faithfully promise you that I will take some shots of a shoe brush.....really, it will all become clear very soon.....

I sometimes deliberately make a post without using any smilies at all. It's amazing how you choose your words and phraseology more carefully, and it sounds really polite and reasonable. Smilies are sometimes used (but not here on FSC though) to excuse sniping remarks because the subtext of old 'roll-eyes' for example is "Hey! I just said something dodgy, but I'm only kidding" I think part of this problem you raise is because different forums use different smileys, and perhaps on different forums what appears to be the same smiley actually may have a different cultural resonance. This is too heavy. Can't we talk about sheep?

This is too heavy. Can't we talk about sheep? Oh, bruddah! I think that I need more coffee.... (I know what you mean, Seri. The embarrassed one isn't sheepish enough!" )

Oh, bruddah! I think that I need more coffee.... (I know what you mean, Seri. The embarrassed one isn't sheepish enough!" ) The things I'll do for you ......I've just spent ages scouring the net for an 'embarrassed sheep' emoticon to send to you, but all I got was a lot of very dodgy stuff, so I must be more careful with my search terms in future ;D I did find this though, and will trust you to keep it entertained for a short while as I've come over all sleepy and need a quick siesta....in fact, come to think of it, I think you'd look pretty cool in one of those old-fashioned English shepherdess outfits ...and did you ever watch 'The Tenth Kingdom'? That's the kind of thing I mean...

I find all this discussion a little woolly. Lets have it straight..I can change the smileys if you wish. I must admit I find then irritating. ;D
