As January appears to be the month for B&W, here is a link for 7 free photoshop actions from phototips.biz they are all in working order and this is a trusted site as far as I am concerned. www.phototips.biz/2011/12/free-black-white-photoshop-actions.htmlI can recommend this guys podcast too. That is where I learned of the free actions.

These may be worth playing around with but the examples shown are not that encouraging to be honest. They seem to be converting low key shots into high key by using selective contrast control. This is really blowing those whites. That is OK for consistent high key but because we are still seeing some of the lower key base image it just makes the whites look blown. I don't use PS so there may be some further control possible.

I don't think they are going to be a replacement for SEP but the examples are not really representative of what they do.
I had a quick try of them and once the action is finished all of the layers are grouped in a folder so you can open it and play around a bit to tweak them. For someone with a CS version of photoshop, but no SEP, I would say they are worth having. If nothing else they show you another persons conversion workflow.

Thats good that layers are retained. I use a plugin for b/w but manipulate the layers well away from the 'default'
