Although it may not always seem like it I am steadily working through your comments and suggestion (smileys aside ) The latest mod could be contentious for a photography forum and I can adjust or remove this facility as you see fit. If an image is posted >1024px in width or height (whichever is the greater) your image is now re-sized automatically to 1024px. When this occurs you will see a note at the top of the image informing you of the % reduction applied and clicking the image cause a new window to open showing the full size image. There is a downside to this; if an image is automatically re-sized (i.e. it was posted at greater than 1024px in height and/or width it will no longer show in the lightbox (with the black background) as described above the image will now open in a separate window (on white background) Confused...so am I - actually it is a neat solution but it it imposes a rule; if you want your image to be viewed on black...your image must be <1025px (width and/or height) Have a play look at some of your images and tell me what you think. The 1024px limit can be increased or decreased (I know Katy will want 800px and she may be right) FOOTNOTE: I am using Firefox. If you experience any issues whilst using another browser let me know. In theory all the code I am using should be fine with Firefox, IE, Safari and all most popular variants. Image at 1024 x 682 Image >1024px

It is a little confusing - just a little! Actually, I like the larger sized photo but they just don't really fit on my screen. How many more people will be put off by the frustration? I've gotten used to it, though. I'm easy going; so, whatever you guys decide is good for me!

I think the re-sizing is good to have really as it gives some consistency at least and prevents mishaps uploading too large an image. The advantage of when it opens on a new page rather than the lightbox is you can zoom in and out if you want.

I would think from a strictly 'viewing' perspective a consistent smaller image of 1024 pixels would be good and maybe it should be a requirement for consistency in competitions.
For critique and commentary, wouldn't it be better to be able to post an original size image with the zoom feature, particularly for rework posting examples? Some issues, and the correction thereof, can be very difficult to see in the smaller sizes.

Is it not possible to resize down to 800px for the thread and allow a larger (1024) image in the lightbox? That way Katy and others can see the complete image in the thread but for those that are able and for the others that wish to look in greater detail, the larger lightbox version is also available.

I upload max 1024 dpi 72 to smug mug then across to here, but when I choose get embeddable link, the choices are small, medium. Or large - Steve I am not sure which of those 3 choices to choose to 'keep' that size?
If you let me know, then perhaps all the smug muggers here can use the same choice.
I know Facebook resized to 720, and if you go larger they will downsize with resultant softening, so I resize to 720 and then resharpen before posting there.

I have a work round to view all images on a black background even if they are above the forums default auto width setting. You need to be using Firefox (isn't everyone ) to do this: Go to the firefox address bar and type in about:config You will get a popup dialog warning about voiding warranty...ignore it and click "Ill be Careful, I Promise" You will then be confronted with a long list of configs for the browser. Scroll down the list until you reach browser.display.background_colour click the entry (might be double-click) at the point where you see #ffffff and you will get a pop-up dialog with the hex colour entry #ffffff change this to #000000 click ok and close the browser tab. Thats it. Now images that are opened in a separate window will be on a black regardless of where you open them from. Neat eh?

Steve
I use Firefox and have a 27 inch monitor. When I click #1 it looks very good (couldn't be better) and if I don't have any side bars (bookmarks etc) set it fills the screen. The second image looks OK on white. But doesn't fill the screen and on white isn't so great.
These things are always going to be tricky due to different browsers being used, as well as different size monitors.
