Which crop works best? Like the whole image but feel the sky is "too" much blue in an otherwise all red/green/gray environment...but also not sure it really hurts. Help!

Hi Chris. Good to see that you too have found your way here. I was 24 hours ahead of you I think.
I prefer the tighter crop without the sky, which does seem a distraction. Certainly nothing wrong with an all red/green image.
It's amazing how often one is actually faced with this problem, trying to get key parts of the shot in the finished image but by so doing having to compromise with possible distractions.

I would prefer the one on the right, Chris. If I will work on this image, I will still crop it tighter to emphasize the play of shapes and colors alone on the image. Something like this: A little extra texture would also add some effect on the metal structures. Ooopps! Sorry on the mouse cursor making its way on the crop. My apologies. Here's the one without the cursor:

I agree with Mike - the tighter crop is better for me. The vertical and horizontals are strong, but are distracted in the 1st image by the curve of the sunlit roof edge with the narrow slit of blue sky above.

Hi Chris. I am with the others the tighter crop eliminates the messy edge at the top

How far do you think I can go and not lose the "train-ness" of the image? I think Jiro's is a little too cropped to maintain the idea of train...Arrrgghhhh

I was more attracted to the play of shapes that is why I cropped it very tight. Your crop definitely shows it as a part of the train.

Chris, I think your second crop is certainly "trainy" and nicely balanced. I also prefer the "Height to Width" ratio of your crop #2.

I guess I should have clarified the "train-ness" obsession but this was shot during one of the "Worldwide Photo Shoots" sponsored by Scott Kelby. Our group met in a small town nearby and did a short loop of the town where we tried our best to exemplify those objects or people who personified the town. Keeping the train as a train is an important feature to the shot.
The train is a central part of downtown and played an important part to its original development so it was one thing to focus upon...I have a number of other shots I will post in a little while, hoping I can get some good feedback from the forum.
