Okay, this is one you criticized, Chris, for its lack of a focal point, but my brother-in-law apparently liked it and my sister was wanting to print it for him for Xmas last year. (It was shot on their new cottage property.) I didn't give her the file as I thought it could be better, so maybe Dave can help me turn it into something that I can be really proud of and gift to them myself.

Here is my contribution. Unedited. I just liked it because it was a patchwork of triangles. _MG_0268m by mariehass, on Flickr Feel free to tell me if it is not a viable entry. 'Rie

Dave, I am thrilled to have this opportunity. Thank you for one of the best birthday presents ever! For those following along, this is the shot SOC I will send you a link to the RAW file on my Mediafire account.

Unless you feel that it lends itself more to b&w, I am inclined to go with colour, as that is what my brother-in-law saw.

cool, the main problem is the image is to confusing and lacks direction, we need to make the viewers eye follow a path, so we need to bring out a foreground interest that will lead to a middle ground then onto a background interest hopefully leading back round to the foreground, how we can do that is exposure layers in photoshop, whats available to you in your program?

Unfortunately, Aperture doesn't do layers. It does allow me to brush adjustments onto the highlights, midtones and shadows, or a combination thereof, and then fine-tune those adjustments. The brushes are analogous to masks.
I also have the complete collection of Nik plug-ins (including Dfine, Viveza, SEP2, CEP4, and Sharpener Pro) if you would prefer to take that route.

i dont use plugins as i use a brush to paint them in, still it sounds like aperture can do that in a different way so we'll try that, shall i work on the file and show you step by step on how to build it up, then you follow along doing the same in aperture? ill try and do it in lightroom to get the same effect

First we need to gove the photo some structure, the rocks in the foreground need to come out of the photo at the moment they are lost, so get an exposure brush and darken everything else down

Forgive me, Dave, but I had difficulty discerning what all you had included as foreground rock and I may have gone too far. And/or not far enough if you meant me to include the rocks on the far right of the frame. Part of my difficulty in seeing what you had done was due to the fact that your colour is already different than mine. Did you made a WB or some other colour adjustment? Or is it a case of your converter interpreting the NEF differently than mine did? Aperture doesn't actually allow me to do selective exposure adjustments, so I used the burn brush instead.
