As previously reported, I've had to buy myself a new ball head – in order to support the four way focus slider rail thingy (The full on Lord Ashcroft, limited edition, signature model – no less). The problem with my existing ball head is that the slider rail + camera + 180mm macro lens is very close to the load limit of the ball head. In fact – when tilted over, the poor thing was creping and showing signs of distress. Long story short – the popular American models are vastly overpriced here in the UK so I got the largest load capacity German model I could find. Behold – the mighty FLM 58F  …. doing the job that the old head could not cope with. You will notice that the focus rail has adopted a graceful arc – rather than sticking to the straight line I'd prefer.   …. and the previous incumbent – facing retirement and an uncertain future.  |

We could start WW3 with less hardware than that. I've just read a good book on Josephine (Napoleon's wife) and she took two hours each morning to dress. I can see that you spend the same time assembling your kit... ;D

It looks the business Nick. Congrats on your Centreball 58F. Why has the rail bent by the way. Rail is not actually bent. When the load comes off from that extreme angle it returns to normal. The weight and angle causes the working clearances to open up all in one direction. I think it's fair to say that I'm operating this thing at the outer edge of it's load capacity. |

Those extra bits wot I got - you know - the QR plates that cost half as much as the focus rail - allow me to assemble this photographic engine in much less than two hours.... no really..... honest ..... no probs.  |

I think I saw her on a hen party in Blackpool once upon at time. That is some kit Nick. It would not do for me at all. I get very flustered when I have too many knobs to twiddle  |

Oh come on - lighten up. You know that knob twiddling is good for you - it's a proper chaps proper thing. Now speaking strictly for myself - I find that getting flustered whilst knob twiddling is easily avoided. All you have to do is become intimately knowledgeable with ones equipment - that's best done with lots of practice. Of course making radical (and expensive) changes to ones equipment may lead to some disorientation. But fear not - extra twiddling practice usual results in a restoration of former levels of expertise, and a satisfactory result.  |
