Actually it's one rose with two different crops.I'm planning on setting up a smugmug account to start selling some of my images.Have been going through them to find ones that I feel are worthy. Found this rose image taken a few months ago that I liked so I gave it a square crop.Wasn't to sure about the openess on the left side so I cropped off both sides. Your inut will be highly valued(on the images and any info on smugmug)as i'm treading new waters.

In this particular shot, I think the diagonals of the petals work better on the second image...and for reference as to selling images, square crops are relatively difficult sales unless they are quite large (wall size as in the lobby of an office building).

Ra, I agree with Chris, the second is a more pleasing finish to a lovely subject. I have the mid level smug mug acct & whilst I haven't tried sales through it, I have had no problems getting images uploaded etc.

FWIW, I like them both, but they do different things for me. The first one breathes more, and the softness dominates. The diagonals dominate in the second one and I find it both more intimate and more abstract. On the whole, I think I actually prefer the first, as there is more of that gorgeous soft colour to luxuriate in.

I think the second one works slightly better, although both are good. ... square crops are relatively difficult sales unless they are quite large (wall size as in the lobby of an office building). I just sold 20 framed pictures to a business for £1,300 - 10 of them are square format. They are only 12x12 inch prints in frames about 17 inches square.

Well! Aren't you the exception to the rule! ;D I've sold square crops but I generally put them in rectangular mattes/frames because I find they do tend to sell better. In this configuration I generally use something to the effect of 2.5x2.5x2.5x3.5.
However, that said, I just submitted a bid for a series to a local chain of small restaurants and many of them are square. If I get the bid, then I can post the shots after they are first seen in the restaurants but not before which would violate the "original works, never before seen," clause.
I think more and more, people are looking for the imagery than anything else, regardless of format. We'll see, eh?

It's the first time I've bid on anything like this so not holding my breath, but it would be nice

Hi Ron Just to be the exception to the rule, I like the square crop the best, and that would be the one I would hang on the wall. Its a really luxurious looking image, like you could just jump into it and snuggle up for a while.
You will get no complaints about smugmug from me. It's very reliable, easy to customise as much or as little as you want and although I don't use the online sales at the moment, it sounds like a good set up.
They put the prices up quite considerably a few months back but I think it is still great value for what you get.

Thanks Steve. ;D
As far as selling prints,I think it might be easier to have a site set up on smugmug, order one print for each photo I would like to sell, then make up some business card with the site info.I could then go to some of the festivals around these parts and set up a booth to show my prints, hand out the cards and let the consumer know about the different choices of print size and whom they wish to order their prints from.or something like that.

They are both beautifully done, but I prefer the square crop. The colors are really yummy.

That sounds like a good plan. At least you don't have to get involved in the order process that way, just sit back and watch the money roll in If you want business cards, www.moo.com is first class. You can get different images on each card so it is like having a mini portfolio in you pocket with you.
