80-400 Nikkor, f/4.5-5.6 First shot is with the new TCIIIE 2X extender at 800mm handheld in late afternoon light. This is from about 60 feet (20 meters). The next three are just some random pelican shots also shot in very late afternoon light. These are all done without the extender. And finally as I was leaving the park...

Beautiful, I love that lamp. Love the color in the last one.
How did you ever get that extender on there? I have the same lens and have been looking to see how that would go on, and it does not like it at all.

Extender is the New TCE III 2x. I checked with Nikon twice before giving it a go and they said perfectly okay on a live chat which I duly screen copied (just in case it was a joke). It's too much for handholding at 800mm. The best effective range I could use was around 550 and still be able to track a bird in flight. So for that, I will be getting the 1.4 which will give me an effective range of 560mm at f/8. The 2x takes two stops of light at the long end which means on a bright sunny day, you can shoot at f/11 as your starting point. With a gimbaled tripod it would be okay for sitting ducks, but really quite cumbersome otherwise..
Do you have the latest greatest version of the 80-400 or the older model. I am not sure the extender works with the older model. I have the lens coupled to a D800. If you are shooting a half frame, it range out at 50-600 or thereabouts.

I fixed it for you Chris. For some reason the "HTT" was missing from the start of the link, it started "ps.farm.static.etc etc etc"
Nice results for sure.
I got all excited the other day when I listened to a podcast and they were talking about the canon 200-400 with built in 2x extender at $1700. I couldn't find it anywhere and then realised they made a mistake and that lens is actually $12,000 !!
