At Oktoberfest - she's looking out the window at the brass band that was playing drinking songs, waltzes and polkas. Very fun! It's a 'candid' obviously. C&C, pretty please...

Kate mate. It's your sister, obviously I think, even with this type of shot. The subject needs more room. Even If it's just a window to the right and bar to the left. To see what is around the subject (Sis) helps to tell the story. It could even be a collection of say 5 - 10 Images telling the story of the Oktoberfest. If you have taken more then this 1 Image, I would like to see the whole story you have to tell. There you go, a theme! As for the colour... rain check?

At first sight, this looks quite timeless, which is aided by the slightly soft focus. Bu then you zoom in to her ear and think "Na, modern." because it would not have been the fashion to have two holes in the ear. I like the slightly distracted expression you have caught, unposed and natural, but like Mick, would like to see a little more of the background. Fussy, ain't I.

Katy
I know it's a candid, and you take what you can work with, but the light on her face/neck looks too flat. About half-way down her jaw it's hard to distinguish between jaw and neck. That makes the highlight spot on the top of her head even more pronounced. If you are doing candids like this you don't have much control over lighting if you want to keep it natural (as this is), so I think it's best to just shoot lots of shots, and hope that one will turn out better than the others.

Alright, all y'all! It took me so long to reply because I'm trying to absorb what you said. The restaurant is extremely charming and atmospheric but, because I wasn't going to bring my camera (to preserve the amicability of familial relationships : , I only brought it on a last second whim - with an almost dead battery and only the 60mm prime. I'm just explaining the situation. I did, actually, back up as far as I could without sitting in the lap of the man who was down the bench at the next table from us. So, I see that it would be nice to have a little bit more story and, I guess, what about if I had never said anything about Oktoberfest - just as an image - how does this work? You know what I mean? Well, I did take a fair few more after this one (carefully, so as to not have my camera confiscated. ) I'm still working on them. Rob, I was wondering if anyone would pick up on her neck. I had a struggle of a job removing a very strange shadow. Here it is before my attempts. There is, actually, more shadow (though it's subtle) along her chin and I really don't know what to think about that bigger blotch of shadow. ( ) Edit: took this photo off - it's represented in the next post.

Alright, I've worked on it on and off, all day. I can hardly tell what I'm doing anymore. Is this any better??? Here's another one. (Silly me was missing the gestalt and hyper focusing on the earring. : except, now, maybe, they're too pink? Absolute blarg!

Hello Katy and everybody else ! Indeed the portrait is a little too tight but - considering you were not supposed to sit in the legs of the man behind, what he probably would like - we can see and understand you have done the best you could. I like the shallow DOF
