I worked until the wee hours this am figuring out where I omitted a step (actually two steps, and still have to reconcile one) and came up with this new edit. It took 24 actions to get here and while it is a good start, it's still not exactly where I want to be. I thiink I need a good class in using all the nuances of layer masks. First is SOOC and second is B&W conversion.

Chris, Not to be contrary for the sake of it – but are you sure B&W is right for this image? I guess I'm trying to figure out how to get some nice variation in all that “black” road surface.

I'm really just experimenting with layers, layer masks, ways to create or recreate a variety of tonal values. The spider web was the first experiment, and the roadway as a brighter image was the second, but to take it a step farther, I went the opposite way and tried some doom and gloom from the same original image...

Thanks, and yes, I do shoot RAW except this one was shot a while back in jpeg before I had a raw processing program. Are you using an earlier version of PS CS5. I noticed in your tutorial some differences in the dialogue commands. I am using CS5.

Loving that final edit Chris.
We have the "Jiro Effect", perhaps we will soon immortalise Dave with the "Cannockwolf Effect" ;D

Oh no...that was only the effect I was going after...for your work, I'd use the term BOLD-DARING-DRAMATIC...which is what I have been trying to achieve.
This is an area you've not just achieved, but mastered with very rich blacks against stong grays. I will get there..sooner or later.

Hi Chris, I'm liking your edited version. We may have to rename this forum to the 'Monochrome F-Stop Cafe' ;D

I am only surprised your work is not being discussed more widely. It has certainly prompted a lot of interest here at FSC. Your formal adjectivisation only a matter of time Chris, I do very much like your final edit. One small niggle is the 3 leaves that have appeared on the road...a dust pan and brush are a must in that photo bag
