What shutter speed did you use, as I would had expected it to be a tad sharper. But I do like the fact that the moon is not centre of the image, but saying that, with it being a full moon then a square crop might well work.

f/11 @ 1/80...but I shot a variety of exposures as I was really trying to capture the clouds lit up by the moon...not enough lens to pull that off. This lens doesn't focus well as the 300 mm mark. I did back it off to 280mm but even at that, it still has a very-very narrow field of tight focus...it's great for other stuff at f/4-8 but sucks pretty much after that,

1/80 should be ok, but with this type of shot with the subject so far away, then f5.6 should had been fine and lower the ISO and maybe even up the shutter speed.

i personally think 1/80 might not be fast enough, i used a tripod with a remote release and delayed exposure, the smallest amount of vibration will wreck a moon shot, that looks a bit soft tbh, check out the exif on this Date Time Original: 2008:09:21 01:27:54 Exposure Time: 1/200 F Number: 8 Exposure Program: Manual ISO Speed Ratings: 200 Metering Mode: Pattern Flash: Flash did not fire Focal Length: 400 White Balance: Auto white balance Make: NIKON CORPORATION Model: NIKON D300

1/200 does seem to be a better shutter speed, as you will be surprised just how quickly that moon is moving across the sky.
