Which do you like best?

I prefer #2 better, tho neither one "grabs" me. Both seem much too busy and it is hard to enjoy the boat and its reflection. I do appreciate the general "overgrown-ness" of the scene, if that was your intent but it seems a bit "contrasty". I hope you do not find me overly critical.

I'm crushed.... Unfortunately, such things are rarely in nice, clean areas...there was no way to shoot the boats and not get the background in..that is partly why I went so contrasty to set the boat off the background. Maybe it didn't work.

Of the two I like #1 as there is less of the distracting background behind the boat.Unfortunately, short of taking a chain saw with you, there is not much you can do about the pine trees in this state which IMO make it difficult to take a good image.

Well, that wasn't an option, though I thought about it for a minute or two...here is the color version of #2. I am going to work on the color version of #1 just to see if I can eliminate the background clutter with some delicate rearranging and maybe a whole new background...

Sorry - I did not mean to crush you, my friend. It was my first brave attempt at a Chris-esque critique! ;D Ya know? I rather prefer the color version. It sets the boat out from the background! Could you repost #1 in color also? Marie

I just finished it and discovered an odd anomoly in Photoshop CS5. If you go to save your file as a tiff and click enter at the first dialogue box instead of going to the compression and file size menu box, it deletes the file and turns off photoshop...and all your work is gone. Sighhhhhhhhhh an hour's work shot to hell.

Chris, I like version #1 colour best. I don't have a problem with the background on that. I feel #2 has as much distraction in the foreground as in the background. Can clone out?

#2 cloned...I am going to have to go do a reshoot at a different time of day...lighting was all wrong. Cloned foreground and removed the bluish cast.

Chris, good morning!
I like the color, less contrasty versions much, much better.

Oh Oh Chris - I'm liking the reflections in the water on the latest edition. When you do a re-shoot maybe you will be able to have the reflections as the major part of the image and thus avoid the hard edged background? In any event - definitely worth another go - or three.

agree with the separation problems, the colour probably helps a little
