As I mentioned in another post, I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to "width to height" ratios of images. All my images fall into one of these size ratios : 1:1 , 4:3 , 3:4 or 4:1.5 (for panoramic style) It's funny how none of these are same as my Sony std format of 4:2.5. I know that I should be using 4:2.5 as this is closest to the "golden ratio" of 1.62 ... but I still prefer the 4:3 . Does anyone else have there own personal preference for image width to height ratio? These are a few "4w:1.5h" format landscape shots, for example. #1 #2 #3

I either stay with the original image size and re-crop to that or use free crop to suit the image, so no real preference.

I tend to use 6:4.5 as my standard ratio. It started as that because it is the best size to fit into the photo albums my wife uses. I have just carried it on for some reason.

I think in all three of the above images, the "Crop" leaves too much unneeded information in the print, whereas, as Barry has commented (and I follow his heed as well), cropping to fit the quality of the image makes more sense. Each to his/her own.

I use a small number of standard crops. 4:3 – my standard default – 1:1, 2:1, 8:3. All are used both portrait and landscape orientation, and are approximate. None of these fit the frame of the camera – which is 3:2. The problem with 3:2 is that it's a poor fit for the printing paper I use. 3:2 is also – IMHO – a poor fit for the UK PAGB max mounted print size for competitions – which is 50cm x 40cm. So I kinda fudge things and print on A3 paper (actually A2 cut in half) at:- 39cm x 29cm , 29cm x 29cm, 39cm x 19.5cm and 41cm x 16cm. All of these give me a nice boarder when mounted (matted) on 50cm x 40cm. The need for standard sizes is driven by using commercial mounts. Basically the ones I buy cost less that the retail price of the same amount of uncut mount board!

Come on man get a move on ;D I rarely print so I use whatever I think is appropriate for the image. The camera standard never seems to be quite right some how...or maybe it is just my composing skills
