Went down to the shore yesterday at sunset. I'm on the east coast so the sun sets over the land – with the possible exception of some locations around mid-summers day. So I set up looking north west (ish) looking toward Budle Bay and Lindisfarne.
First shot is with no filter. As you can see, the dynamic range is way beyond what the camera can manage – histogram overflows left (dark) and right (light).
#1 SOOC 5D 17mm f11 @1/15sec ISO100
Next up is one with a GND in place. Now here is my first mistake – I did not record which filter – Doh. So from now on I will take a marker frame each time I put in a filter – one finger for soft edge, two fingers for hard edge, and three fingers for reverse GND. All my filters are 0.9 – 3 stops. This was taken with either a hard edge or reverse – about 7 minutes later than #1.
#2 SOOC 5D 17mm f11 @1.3sec ISO100
#3 With pp – I'm quite pleased with the overall effect – my viewpoint is a bit wrong and makes things a little unbalanced? - What do you think?
I swung the camera around to face north (ish) since the sky was a bit more interesting by now – about 10 minutes later than #2 / #3
#4 SOOC 5D 23mm f11 @2.5sec ISO100
#5 With pp. I chose to crop 2:1 and I'm quite pleased with it. The bump on the right horizon is Lindisfarne Castle. I should have paid more attention to the sea state here. It was very calm and so the water motion is rendered as just blurred. Not agitated enough for the cotton wool look (shutter too fast), and no definition (shutter too slow).
