This sounds a bit like terminology from a gothic video game and I will see if I can change it but in the meantime I propose we use this facility as follows;
Karma indicates a running total of votes. When another member exalts you one is added to the total - conversely when someone smites you one vote is subtracted from the total 'karma'
I suggest we use the votes to indicate when we find a post interesting or useful. Since we are all adults I suggest we forget the 'smite' option. I do not intend that this function is used to express our feelings towards a posted image though. I want to promote good constructive feedback on images and clicking on exalt or smite with respect to our feelings toward an image is counter productive
As always - this is your forum so if you have any other suggestions about how we use this function please reply to this post or PM me

Steve, you have done lots of hard yards in setting up this for us, so you get some good karma from me, just for that.

To be honest, I've never liked or used anything like exalt, smite, or karma on any forum, and am very glad that the suggestion is that we don't use the first two. As for karma, from what I've seen over the years, while some people use them as a force for good - to reward good work for the forum (as Kit just did) others are tempted to use them to express how much they like or dislike a person rather than as a way of rating a post or action. Too schoolplaygroundish all round. So I won't be using them at all, and if I really like something, will say so in a post instead.... But I admit to not being clear about this. If the karma points are attached to a specific post, I'm all for it, but if they stick to the poster, I'll opt out. But I'm willing to be converted if good reason is given. I'm a bit extreme anyway - I don't even like being upgraded on forums on account of the amount of posts I've sent in, because I don't think that just hanging around on one for a long time makes me any better than someone who's just arrived Seri (in an uncharacteristically serious mood )

On one forum that I am also a member of (though not a very active one) we also use a Karma button to give reward to the poster in relation to the image posted. If I like the image based on how good it really is, I give one Karma points to that poster. The idea there is that it takes some effort to get a Karma point. As an encouragement, if you are a new member, one of the Admins will give you your first Karma point as a start then you gradually increase your Karma points as you progress on your photographic skills.
The rewarding of Karma points by other members are highly subjective just like what Seri described it. I hope that in order for us to avoid favoritism, I suggest that we give Karma points based on the image posted and explain why he/she deserves to be given a Karma point.
My other opinion is that we abolish the Smite button as I don't see that it fits the community. There are no bosses or exalted egos that will rise above the rest here so frankly I don't see the essence of the smite button. Just my personal opinion. I would love to get the opinions of others as well aside from the ones posted before. Thanks.

Well I've never heard of 'Smite' on a forum before, but the word did stick in my memory for some reason.... thought I'd share with you, where I had heard it before.... ;D

Me thinks Kay deserves one karma for that post.LOL ;D That series is absolutely brilliant. I love the sketches with the head customs officer. I was relieved that the BBC was still willing to screen risque politically incorrect comedy. PC was starting to stifle british comedy for a while.

I haven't seen this series as I don't watch TV apart from BBCiPlayer. It looks very funny. I always loved Matt Lucas as the 'last gay in the village'. I often go to Llandewi Brefi to go mountain-biking, and I always think it's such an incongrous place to set it! It makes you proud to be Welsh - what an export!

I guess I'm with you on this one Seri The poll's due to lock today at 6.31pm. So far it's a bit of a landslide, but the karma-chameleons may suddenly vote en masse and defeat us In the end, I don't really mind because we can all choose whether to use it or not, just as long as I can place a kind of karma firewall around my avatar..... In truth, I'm a non-theist Zen Taoist Quaker (English, not US style) and my spiritual philosophy forbids me to enter any kind of competition.....does that get me off the hook, do you think? ;D
