I really like the aspect, pov of both shots. The tiny orange (is it a flag on his bike) is a distraction in the first one for me. The second one I really like a lot.

"Perseverance and Insignificance" Sounds like a Jane Austen novel - Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility ;D
I've been thinking a lot lately about perseverance and insignificance, although I probably didn't think in those actual terms. I have a very sick relative in hospital, and it has struck me how insignificant we all are in life (in the overall scheme of things) but at the same time how we must keep going on as far as we can. So these shots are very meaningful to me at this point.
I like both, but from a photographic point of view prefer the composition of #1, and it does seem to have more meaning - for me at least. It shows too that at least some photographs should have some real meaning for our lives.

It's hard to see but on the first one, the rider has an artificial leg on his left side. I was hoping more of the struggle would show through but I was shooting from a heigth of 11 stories with a 55-300mm and it simply wasn't enough lens to show the detail needed. Still, a good shot for that lens. Rob: the second one did the same thing for me as for you...I was overly struck by how small we are in the grand scheme of nature. This is the first shot I made of this woman and while I think it also shows a sense of insignificance, bcause she wasn't in the water, I felt it was more reflective of the moment rather than the awe of what she was in relationship to the vastness around her.

Well seen a captured Chris. Unless these were heavy crops I am thinking a longer lens may not given you much advantage as it would be to tight for the comp and thus changed the over all feel. If they are infact heavy crops then I would have to agree of course. Well done.

Chris, I like both of these. #1 is fine as is. I understand that the flag on the bike might be a distraction – but I happen to like it as it calls a little more attention to the bike – I feel. I did wonder “why a trike?” but did not make the observation about the rider being disabled. Now you've explained – like Paul - I wonder if enough lens to make the statement about rider more emphatic would have the effect of minimising the size of the “struggle”. Anyway I love the play of the light on the sand – don’t you just love sand with a blue hue? #2 I find also has a similar paradox to the one I failed to describe above. I wonder if it could be made more powerful if there where less of it? Maybe 5% of the bottom and 10% of the top?

Both Good shots and great titles Chris.
Number 2 is probably my favourite beacuse of the larger amount of water with that really great texture on it.

Two absolute crackers, Chris. I like both a lot and for different reasons. I feel you have depicted both emotions very well here.

The good thing I see with these two images, Chris is that you are now putting emotions to your images. I really like these shots. If you are going to categorize these 2 as documentary type of photographs then don't alter anything. However, if you want to be artistic, move your subject to where you think it will make your point stronger. I would use the Content Move Aware tool from Photoshop CS6 to do a seamless edit. Well done, Maestro.
