Easy Levels Adjustments in Camera RAW
This quick tutorial will show you the basics of how to set the white and black points for your image in Camera RAW. This is a quick and easy method to give your photos that clean and crisp look.
First open your image in Camera RAW
Then make your adjustments to white balance and exposure to get the basic look you want.
If there are any areas of highlights or shadows that you wish to darken, now is the time to do it. This image doesn’t really need either of those adjustments at the moment.
Now we can go ahead and makes the levels adjustments to set the black and white points.
Hover your pointer over the Whites slider, hold down the ALT key, click and hold the slider and the screen will turn black. As you move the slider to the right you will see which colour channels are starting to clip begin to show on the black screen. You should move the slider until you begin to see the first bit of clipping, and then just go back a touch.
Now do the same thing for the blacks slider. Hover the pointer over the slider, hold down the ALT key, click and hold the slider and the screen will turn white this time. As you move the slider to the left, the areas of black that are starting to clip will begin to show on the white screen. Again, you should keep sliding until the first bit of clipping shows and then go back a bit.
You should see a good difference in your image already so now you can make your other adjustments to finish your RAW processing off.
Here is the before and after shots without any other adjustments.
