I had a wonderful photo opportunity recently – and comprehensively blew it. Mistakes I made included – but where not limited to:- Going on the wrong night so that the tide going out – and giving access to the Island – happened after the moon rise. Not using my GND filters despite this being the ideal situation. Making the high ISO, exposure test shots better compositions than the “real” shots. Trying light painting for the first time on a real shoot instead of practising in the back yard first. Making compositions that likely only have meaning for those who know the location. ….... Ah well – it's not only about the results – sometimes it's about the journey. Yeah – right! #1 The overall set up is OK but a GND would have made for a longer exposure – with more movement in the sky and less noise and more light in the foreground. #2 Wider angle and a bit more cloud action – but still the same as #1 #3 Boat sheds – cloud cover messed up the exposure – so high noise horror story with mushy peas for shadow detail. #4 Boat sheds again – with light painting. All that effort just to duplicate what I could have done with the car lights. #5 Well, this has “blown” highlights and an unbalanced composition - but might just be savable. #6 Same compositional error as #5 – but with an extra boat and a glow around the moon – oh well.

#1 seems pretty good to me though I think I'd opt to go B&W with it.

I'd like to think you're right about the journey, Nick. It seems all I do is make unforced errors, but nothing is worthwhile that is not hard won, right? Keep at it, mon.

Sorry Nick but I have to cast all the technicalities into the pedal bin with this set. The key thing here is that I am on that journey with you..these images take me there and that is down to capturing something that cannot be manufactured with filters and dials....atmosphere 1, 2 and 5 are giving me atmosphere in buckets. A real joy Nick. Sometimes if we look to closely we fail to see the bigger picture

I sometimes wonder where my brain resides at night...another edit on the first exposure whereas I've combined my B&W edit with your original on Luminosity blend... I like it better, anyway...

Well these got folks going. We had Mary smiling. We had Janis down at the travel agent. We had Wirefox getting all technical with a pedal bin. Oh, and we had Chris dinking and blending. Hey Chris, is the dink and blend thing all to do with your new cocktail bar job? Oh wait, no …. it's all chemical darkroom magic – right? Thanks guys.
