I am really enjoying my 50mm prime. I was a bit skeptical when I got it, and put it on my XSI. I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed the flexibility it has given me. _MG_0067m by mariehass, on Flickr I have not done much to this. I was afraid if I got too aggressive with the contrast, the detail in the blacks would disappear. Plus, it was at dusk this evening... 'Rie

Gotta love the nifty 50 and this shot is proof in the pudding as to how good a lens it really is.

When I saw this first on Facebook, I tended very much to like the image and your edit certainly improved the look but in both viewings, I felt there was something missing and until I began to play with it is Photoshop and admittedly, SEP2, I didn't know what it was. In your edit, you lost some of the nice detail in the bigger horse, especially in his mane. Overempahsizing the big guy left the little guy to suffer from over-edit envy. In addition to his being somewhat left out, you also left out the guy leading them both, where in my opinion more of the emphasis should have been placed. thusly, I lightened his shirt just enough to get him off the black horse, darkened the bottoms of his boots to ground him a bit better, lightened the halter on the black horse then put some of the emphasis back on the big guy mostly in his mane and fetlocks. To finish it out, I added a fairly strong vignette to push the eye to the scene at hand, the guy leading the two horses.

Thank you, Chris. I will give those edits a try. In the meantime, this was my last edit. Kind of a cross between what I had, and what you added. _MG_0067m3 by mariehass, on Flickr Marie

throw in a good vignette and I'd say it was a hanger.

Very nice, Marie. The last edit is great, but for the crop. That post on the left has gotten a little too close to the edge and become a bit of a distraction for me.

Jan,
What is really weird is that I did not crop. I went back and checked, and the distortion was caused by the vignette feature in CS5. I can toggle back and forth in History and see it move closer to the edge of frame as the lens correction - vignetting is applied.
Thanks for pointing that out, though.

That's interesting, 'Rie. I didn't know vignetting could have that effect.

I did my vignette in SEP2 so it didn't have the same effect. Sometime ago, Rob posted a turorial on making a mask vignette that I am pretty sure won't affect the "bend" of the plane. I find that pretty strange as well. I think your vignette should stil be considerably stronger since little of the background is telling any part of the story. Case in point:

Whoa Neddy...I loved this image when I first saw it especially the soft glow on the horse in the right of the frame. The subsequent enhancements have created the Ready Brek horse ;D Very near 'Rie but full frame The 50mm is what I call an eye lens - compose and fire away. It gives a superb rendition of what the eye expects to see and that makes it a very powerful image maker. If I could only have one lens it would be a 50mm prime...in fact for years the 50mm never came off my Olympus OM2n. A 50mm makes a DSLR a single unit camera rather than a bag full of compromise.

This is a lovely image Rie. The processing Chris has talked about makes it a real winner.
