I've been reviewing some of my older work – to try and figure out those images that might appeal to anyone other than me. In that regard any thoughts on the attached? Reason I ask with this one in particular is that it may look like I selectively made the top half monochrome. In fact I have not – this is just the way it looked at the time and is one of the reasons why I took the picture . Thank you.

Is the object in the foreground a barge or pier ? I'm thinking pier, but confused by the context of the image, especially as part of the tub boat is occluded by it.
An issue I have is there is no lead or specific subject to the image.
A crop that I'd try would be a panorama aspect ratio, 17:6, to have a banded series of scene elements from, foreground to background, ocean, island, ocean, natural monochrome land with structure.

Hi Nick,
I probably would have shot this scene, too. The structure in the background is itself somewhat evocative of a ship for me, and balances the tugboat, and the island has the shape of a submarine breaking the surface of the water. (That's me; endlessly fascinated by formal resemblances.) I love the soft grey of the background, and the contrast with the blue of the water makes the haze/mist quite palpable.
(Aside: I spent two magical summers working as an archeological field labourer at the site of the trading post that launched the Hudson's Bay Company back in 1670). Every morning, I could see in the mist the tall ships of the French and the English that bore the cannon balls and trade goods that our trowels would uncover later that day. Like I said, magical.)
Steaphany's idea of emphasizing the layering appeals to me as well, though I find it an interesting image as it is.

Hello Steaphany, Yes, the foreground is a pier. Attached is a quick and dirty try at your suggested crop. I like it mucho – especially since the original was done with a 280mm lens on a full frame camera, so if I do a proper redo I will need … oh – about 600mm. Well Christmas is coming soon – now, about that Lottery win!

Janis, Ah, another of our lady members who is into the history thing. Well – this is a sneak preview of another of my new photo locations. The pier is on The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Oh and don't tell Katy – but that's Bamburgh Castle in the background (again). I'll just have to go and update Katy's Kastle Korner and hope she will forgive me. ;D

Well - here is the redo I promised ages ago. Frankly it's a crop too far.
