A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I flew out to Seattle for a visit with our eldest son and his wife. We rented a cabin in the Packwood area, close to Rainier Nat'l Park. We made a couple of trips to Mt. Rainier and one to Mt. St. Helens. The weather was gorgeous. Beautiful series George, what a wonderful place. I think you have successfully convinced me to put mt Ranier on my "to do" list.
The cabin looks great.

Rainier is well worth a trip, especially if you like to do some hiking. Since St. Helens is close by, you can get over to that one as well. There are guided hikes to the summit (in season) there.

Even with guides, Mt Rainier is a dangerous mountain and one should always be prepared for the worst. That mountain has killed more than a few experienced hikers.

Lovely, George. I think I can smell that mountain air!
Just curious about the panorama. Do you know why there is a colour shift in the sky (darker blue in the middle)?

That was my first try at a panorama and I may have messed up an exposure or something. I used Elements 8 to create the composite.

I didn't actually notice it until I looked at the larger version on Flickr and wondered how you exposed. I have only tried to shoot a panorama a couple of times but would like to do more and am struggling to remember the do's and don'ts. Do you meter for, and shoot an average of, the parts of the scene closest and furthest from the sun? Btw, I was just reading last night that the camera in the latest iPhone does an amazing job at adapting the exposure for panoramas: www.dpreview.com/articles/2038527691/editorial-why-i-cant-stop-taking-iphone-panoramas. Can't help thinking all these technological developments take some (or a lot) of the fun away....

I did it amateurishly. 1. No tripod since I was on travel (don't trust TSA). 2. Twisted my torso to take each frame, making sure there was overlap. 3. Aperture priority (Wrong mode, should have been Manual) 4. Spot metering (Wrong metering)

Beautiful, George. You really captured it perfectly. We hiked/climbed Mt. Rainier about 13 years ago. I had been sick for a long long time...in and out of the hospital sometimes for month as a time and about 13 or so surgeries. Recovering and regaining strength was a long process and Mt. Rainier was how I proved to myself that I was better. It truly is a beautiful mountain.

It's great that you have come through your trials and that Mt. Rainier helped you in your recovery.

Me, I read, I memorize, I even go through the motions when I am at home, but somehow, when I am out in the field, all my learning disappears down a rabbit hole.

The pano didn't work too badly, even if you did make a couple of schoolboy errors on the settings.
You have to watch the WB too and set that to a constant.
I haven't done many but on the few I have done, even having done it all correct, with manual focus too, they just don't work. But that makes me keep trying, and also really annoys me that the I-phone can do it so well.
I am glad I came back for another look at these George.
