I've always had Windows based PCs. I've had iPhones and an iPad. How does a Mac desktop compare in operating the iPhone/iPad vs a Windows PC?

You're opening a can of worms with that question 'Rie.
I can only speak as I find and that is my iMac, Macbook Air and iPhone all interact seamlessly, enabling me to share apps and files without really thinking about it. They all just work together straight out of the box.
I also have an older PC but have never used it in conjunction with the iPhone or mbAir so can't draw any comparison.

That was one of the things that has attracted me Mary. The stuff just seems to want yo work together instead of being forced yo through windows. With other things like airplay as well you can use the iPad as a second monitor for the mac, of show what ever you have on the iPad screen on your TV.
The OS gap between the mac and iOS is getting smaller so the platforms are looking and working in quite a familiar way too.
The thing that really put me off windows is that you pretty much have to get windows 8 which is designed to be used on a touch screen. Using it on a non touch screen is pretty awful. Once you are looking at spending enough money to get a touch screen windows PC you might as well bite the bullet and get a Mac IMHO.

We have both systems here and I agree with the chaps, the only thing I find I struggle with on the mac is using it for word processing and excel. Using a PC for my work I have become very familiar and very quick on those programs in the 'office' suite on the PC, I just haven't managed to get any steps along the learning curve on using their mac version on the mac. Having said that I wouldn't want to look at photos on a PC Sorry that doesn't help you choose much does it? But for me both are great for different things.
